Sebi opens 402 investigation cases in FY26, completes 338

India's Securities and Exchange Board (Sebi) initiated 402 investigation cases in FY26 for securities law violations, with insider trading and illegal trade practices accounting for 224 cases and fraudulent practices for 121 cases. The regulator also intensified surveillance of market intermediaries, inspecting over 900 brokers during the period.

Sebi, India's primary capital markets regulator, launched 402 investigation cases in the fiscal year 2025-26 targeting various securities law violations, according to the agency's enforcement activity report. The investigations encompassed multiple categories of misconduct: insider trading and illegal trade practices formed the largest segment with 224 cases initiated, while fraudulent and unfair trade practices accounted for 121 investigations. Financial statement fraud also received regulatory attention, with 57 cases taken up for scrutiny during the reporting period. The regulator completed 338 of the initiated investigations, demonstrating substantial progress in its enforcement agenda. Beyond investigative efforts, Sebi significantly expanded its surveillance operations targeting market intermediaries, conducting inspections of more than 900 brokers throughout FY26.

The scale of Sebi's enforcement activity underscores the regulator's commitment to maintaining market integrity and investor protection in India's capital markets. Insider trading enforcement remains a priority area for regulators globally, as it undermines market fairness and investor confidence. Fraudulent and unfair trade practices, including market manipulation, directly affect market efficiency and price discovery mechanisms. The intensive broker inspections indicate heightened scrutiny over compliance standards among market participants, which carries implications for trading platform operations and commission structures. For market participants and investors, robust enforcement suggests a more controlled trading environment but may also increase operational compliance costs for brokers and institutional traders. The completion rate of 338 cases demonstrates Sebi's capacity to follow through on investigations, potentially signaling higher risk of penalties for violators and creating deterrent effects across the market participant ecosystem.
